I tse su de ti yv da – New Year in Cherokee. As the year 2011 comes to an end and we begin a New Year. We have reflections from the past year with hopes and invitations for the coming year. Great Chiefs and Elders had some great quotes that I treasure and hope you will too.

Chief Standing Bear stated, “When a man’s heart gets away from the appreciation of nature, his heart become hard.” Chief Black Elk prayed “Creator give me strength to walk the earth softly as a relative to all. Give me the eyes to see and the wisdom to understand, that I may be like you. Give me your power to face the strong winds when they blow in my face.” Chief Fools Crow’s prayer was “Make my prayer for all people. I pray that no harm will come to them and there will be no war or ill feelings among us. Each day may we walk hand-in-hand.” The Elder who had the greatest influence on my life; Mom, said, “Forgive. Remember when it rains the old paths are washed away and we are given a chance to create new paths. Don’t allow someone else to keep you from creating your new path.”

Good lessons from Native American Chiefs and Elders for the New Year. Respect God’s creation and enjoy the beauty of nature for it will lead to a greater respect for mankind. Seek strength from the Creator for we are all part of His family. Look at the world through His eyes so we may be more like Him. Face each challenge asking for His power to endure. Pray for protection and be kind to each other so that no one will get their feelings hurt, walk in peace. Forgive each other, even if you think they don’t deserve it. Learn from the hurts and disappointments but move on. Don’t give up your chance for a new path in life by hanging on to unforgiveness.

These are good teachings from wise people to begin a wonderful New Year. Face 2012 with courage and answer the Creator’s call then at the end of the year you can say “this has been the greatest year of all.” May the Sacred Fire of His love continue to burn.
